We’re pretty sure you’ve heard the term “comfort zone.” A lot of times, though, we tend to think of it as a negative thing.
We hear stories about people afraid to try new things because they thought they would fail. They didn’t want to step into a situation where they weren’t ready.
Our schools have been trained not to push students outside of their comfort zones. We don’t want them to feel like failures if they make mistakes or fall short in some way. So we tell our kids that failure is bad and success is good. And then we wonder why they’re so hesitant to take risks.
But what if there was another side to this? What if stepping outside your comfort zone could actually be a fantastic experience?
It doesn’t necessarily mean you go overboard with whatever you do or learn. Sometimes, it just means learning something new, even if you fear it could be hard for you.
But how can you do this without overwhelming yourself?
Let’s find out!
Why is Stepping Out of Comfort Zone Important?
When we stay in our comfort zone, we never get to know ourselves better. We never grow.
When we stay inside our comfort zone, we miss opportunities to help others. When we stay inside our comfort zones, we don’t reach out to those around us. As a result, we could not deepen our knowledge of the topics we wanted to learn.
Therefore, when we step out of our comfort zones, we can expand our horizons, gain more knowledge, and connect with others.
Tips to Step Out of Comfort Zone
The idea of stepping out of one’s comfort zone is often associated with risk-taking. But what if you could take risks without risking anything? There are many ways to enter the growth zone and avoid falling into danger zones.
Here are some tips to help you be comfortable doing the uncomfortable in your learning journey:
1. Be Open-Minded
You will be surprised by what you discover when you step out of your comfort zone. You may even realize that you have some misconceptions about something.
Keeping an open mind will allow you to explore more possibilities and ideas. It will also help you gain different perspectives.
2. Don’t Expect Perfection
If you set high expectations for yourself, you’ll probably end up disappointed. So instead, focus on making progress. If you keep learning something, you will eventually master it.
We have been taught that perfection is the primary goal. But the truth is, no matter how much effort you put into something, you won’t always succeed. That’s okay. The important part is that you tried.
3. Learn From Your Mistakes
Related to the previous point, you should learn from your mistakes. This will help you improve as a person. Contrary to what people believe, making mistakes is not shameful.
So instead of feeling ashamed because you made a mistake, try to understand where you went wrong and how you can avoid it from happening again.
4. Ask Questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions helps you figure out what you don’t know. It also shows you respect the person teaching you.
If you ask someone else about what you’re learning, you’ll be able to get a fresh perspective. Plus, asking questions helps you build relationships with other people.
5. Take Action
The most significant part of stepping out of your comfort zone, yet many would not be brave enough to do so, in reality.
If you want to step out of your comfort zone, you must take action. Don’t wait until you’re 100% ready before you start moving forward, because you never know when it is the perfect time to do so.
Start small. Don’t try to jump right into the deep end.
Try to work on one aspect of your learning journey at a time. For example, instead of trying to learn everything you’ve ever wanted to learn, start with going through one lesson or class every week.
